WSOP: Kate Hoang Runner-Up in Omaha Hi/Lo Event | 16

Two years ago Kate Hoang was heads up for a bracelet in the $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo event. She barely missed becoming the third woman to win an open event that year and had to settle for second place and $182,281.

Yesterday Hoang was once again in a great position to win her first career bracelet, when she faced the French player Julien Martini for an epic heads up battle in Event #4: $1,500 Omaha Hi/Lo. Going into heads up play Hoang was slightly behind Martini in chips, but she quickly pulled ahead. Unfortunately her lead would not hold, and after an impressive marathon battle that lasted more than four hours, Hoang eventually had to settle for the second spot and a paycheck worth $148,150.

But the Omaha Hi/Lo specialist from Federal Way, Washington, was not done playing yet and she quickly jumped into the $10,000 Omaha Hi/Lo Championship only to be eliminated later in the night.

With several Omaha events on the WSOP schedule Hoang will have plenty of opportunities for more final tables and deep runs. Let’s hope the third time is the charm for the Vietnamese born poker player who is up to more than $400,000 in live tournament earnings at this point.

Here is a peek at some of the biggest and dramatic wins of the 3rd week. Michael “the Grinder Mizrachi” managed to bag his 5th bracelet in the $1500 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better. Of course we were right there when the last card was dealt and in the fashion we’ve come to love from the Grinder he compared his winning 5 bracelets to popping out kids.

All eyes were glued to the $10K Dealers Choice this week as Shaun Deeb and Adam Friedman battled it out. Shaun was unhappy with the decision to stop play 5 handed and come back for Day 4.

Deeb finished runner-up and the bigger story shifted to the fact that Adam Friedman won this tournament back-to-back, making him arguably the most versatile poker player in the world.

Drama continued in the argument about whether to include the Final Fify in the Fantasy Draft. This affects both fantasy drafts and many side bets with LOTS of Money on the line. People seemed divided evenly on both sides of the issue and so Daniel Negreanu decided to institute three neutral arbitrators, Isaac Haxton, Jason Somerville and Phil Galfond.

And as of Late last night the issue has been put to bed. The additional tournament will not be included.
Upeshka De Silva has catapulted into the lead in the 2019 WSOP Player of the Year race after having earned his third career bracelet in Event #38: $600 WSOP.com ONLINE No-Limit Hold’em Knockout Bounty That finish came just after De Silva came in third in Event #31: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em Six-Handed which along with four other cashes give him enough points currently to sit at No. 1. Have a look at where the players stand to date.

partypoker LIVE Giving Online Option for Start of Main Events

partypoker LIVE Giving Online Option for Start of Main Events 32

Do you like news about partypoker? Well, you are about to get more news about partypoker. The online poker room has announced that it will begin allowing players who wish to compete in the partypoker LIVE events the opportunity to begin the tournaments on the internet.

It sounds a little weird, but the structure is quite simple. Those who start the tournament online will compete during the first two days on partypoker and then join the live tournament on Day 3. Those playing at the live venue will just play poker as normal through the first two days.

Everyone who makes it to Day 3, whether they start online or live, will be in the money.

On the partypoker blog, partypoker Managing Director Tom Waters said:

This is a great concept and the fact that players will not have to travel to a live event until they are in the money is brilliant.

It means more flexibility for players and will save them on travel and expenses.

We’re trying to make our tournaments more accessible and I really hope this idea is a success, helping those players that find it difficult to take time off work, as well as reducing costs for everyone.

In a short video introducing the idea, partypoker LIVE founder and owner of the Dusk Till Dawn poker club Rob Yong said that he hopes that giving more players the opportunity to participate will bring more people out to the partypoker LIVE Main Events.

He added that this is in experimental mode right now and that if it’s a hit then partypoker will continue with it, but if players don’t like it, then they will ditch the concept.

There is no mention on the partypoker website of there being any break between Day 2 and Day 3, so one would assume that players who survive Day 2 online will still have to make it over to the partypoker LIVE venue for the tournament the next day. Thus, the players will still need to be within a reasonable travel distance. That said, it will definitely allow people to save time and money if they are knocked out in either of the first two days.

While different, the online-to-live format is not a completely foreign concept in poker. When the World Series of Poker introduced its first online bracelet event, it was scheduled to pause after the final table was determined and then moved to the Rio the next day to finish it up live. Players complained that those who lived several hours away would have a rough go of it if they made the final table and then immediately had to drive to Las Vegas, so a one-day gap was inserted.

After the first two years of online bracelet events, the World Series of Poker scrapped the live final table idea and kept all of the events completely online.

The next partypoker LIVE event is MILLIONS Vegas @ Aria from June 28th to July 2nd.
